Turn and Track the Ball to the Wall: Don't Backpedal
The Situation
A ball is going to pass you toward the back wall and you backpedal to chase it, losing balance.
What To Do
Turn side-on and run with the ball toward the back wall, watching it over your shoulder, rather than shuffling backwards. Get there ahead of the bounce, set up facing the side, and let the wall bring it to you.
Why It Works
Backpedalling is slow, off-balance, and the cause of countless missed wall balls, you arrive late and reaching. Turning and running like an outfielder lets you cover the ground quickly and arrive set, facing the right way, with the ball dropping into your strike zone off the wall. Good wall defence is a footwork skill before it is a racket skill: get there early and the shot becomes easy.
Court Positioning
Ball passing the player toward the back wall. Correct: player turns side-on and runs with it, watching over the shoulder. Incorrect: player backpedalling, off balance, arriving late.
